Compassionate,
Evidence-Based Therapy

DBT Therapist in Washington and Iowa named Sonja Adams

I’m Sonja, a therapist offering virtual counseling in Washington and Iowa.

I’m glad you’ve found your way here. Seeking support is a powerful first step toward reconnecting with yourself and the life you want to build. My role is to offer a space where you feel understood and supported as we explore what matters most to you, uncover what may be standing in the way, and work toward meaningful change. You don’t have to navigate this on your own.

My Approach to Therapy

I offer a supportive, compassionate space where you can slow down, feel understood, and begin making the changes that matter most to you. My work is rooted in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)—two evidence-based approaches that help people navigate intense emotions, heal from past experiences, and build more fulfilling lives. I’m also a certified Eating Disorder Specialist and can help you create a healthier relationship with food.

DBT Gold Standard

If you’re interested in DBT, you might consider DBT Gold Standard. This is a comprehensive approach, which includes individual therapy, group skills training, between-session coaching, and a therapist consultation team composed of intensively trained DBT clinicians. This method is one of the most extensively researched behavioral treatments available, and I encourage you to reach out if you’re interested in learning more! I only offer this service to those in Iowa, but if you’re a Washington resident and are interested in Gold Standard, please reach out to DBT Eastside at the link below.

My Services

As a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), I offer one-on-one, couples, and group therapy sessions that are designed to help you bring more peace and clarity to your life. Whether you have something specific you would like to work through or are just looking for some help navigating life, I’m here.

In individual therapy, I work with you to create a personalized path forward. Together, we’ll explore what’s been weighing on you and identify practical, meaningful ways to move through it.

My hope is that therapy feels like a place where you can show up as you are—without pressure or judgment—and begin to feel more steady, connected, and empowered.

Individual Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a practical, skills-based approach designed to help people better understand and manage intense emotions, cope with stress, and build healthier relationships. DBT skills groups are a supportive and structured way to learn these tools alongside others.

Group DBT Therapy

I offer couples counseling for partners who feel stuck in painful communication patterns, frequent conflict, or cycles of disconnection that leave both people feeling misunderstood. Using a DBT-informed approach, we work to slow these interactions down, better understand the emotions underneath them, and build skills that support more effective communication, validation, and connection.

Couples DBT Therapy

“We cannot shame ourselves into change—we can only love ourselves into evolution.”
